About RDRAM Memory
Potentially becoming a force in the industry is RAMBUS (RDRAM, also known as "RIMM") memory. Named for RAMBUS® Inc., the manufacturer, in partnership with Intel® Corporation, RAMBUS memory provides a 1.6 GB/second transfer rate on a narrow 16-bit bus ("RAMBUS channel"). Speeds reach a transfer rate of 6.4 GB/second by grouping four of these RAMBUS channels together to conform to today's 64-bit wide bus. Higher bandwidths are planned for the years ahead. RDRAM bears a resemblance to high-speed DDR devices in that data transfer occurs at both the rising and falling edges of the system clock. The modules work at an 800MHz rate on a 400MHz system clock, and helps to cut down power by using a 2.5V supply voltage. This not only reduces heat, but also assists in reducing noise interference. Since such high frequencies are used, the modules must be placed very close to the CPU to avoid potential noise problems.
